Here’s What ‘Sustainable’ Means According To Today’s Youth

What does sustainable mean? It’s a question that has  presented itself many times on The Wellness Feed in both our interviews with brands and also articles where we have offered our own definition of sustainable. But, what does it mean for tomorrow’s youth who will be the ones leading the movement towards living sustainable lifestyles? At a United Nations youth forum in 2016, several delegates were asked what the word means to them. While the answers varied from being aware to reducing your energy use one common theme was apparent in their answers. The definition of sustainable living is about making small choices that will positively impact our planet. And, a lot of these choices can be made everyday.

Similar to how brands must make small choices to choose sustainably sourced materials or recyclable packaging, we as consumers must also make conscious choices to be green in our everyday lives. As heard in the video that can translate to carrying a reusable water bottle instead of a single-use plastic one or intentionally spending our money on products from sustainable brands. As individuals this can minimize our own impact on the environment. As a community we can reduce CO2 emissions, plastic pollution and even help to protect against forest degradation. For instance, the reason for carrying a reusable water bottle can help reduce the 8 million tons of plastic that end up in our ocean’s yearly. Supporting sustainable fashion brands can help to prevent deforestation in the Amazon.
