When You’re Not Feeling Amazon Try These 11 Sustainable Marketplaces
This month I had the pleasure of testing out a few hairbrushes from Tangle Teezer, a leading brand in the haircare space founded by hair stylist Shaun P. in 2007. Tangle Teezer is a haircare lover’s dream, offering detangling brushes, styling brushes, detangling sprays, and even pet grooming brushes! This beauty brand is also a sustainability lover’s dream, as the company is all about transparency, reducing their carbon footprint, and finding innovative ways to become more environmentally friendly.
This month, for example, I tested out Tangle Teezer’s ecofriendly Plant Brush made from castor beans! I also evaluated a fan favorite, the Ultimate Styler hairbrush, and here are my thoughts:
PRODUCT REVIEW
Ultimate Detangler Plant Brush
Tangle Teezer’s latest environmentally friendly venture is the Plant Brush, a detangling hairbrush made from beans. Yes, you read that correctly- beans! 85% of this brush is made from sustainably sourced castor beans, a unique plant-based material. This brush was created in alignment with Tangle Teezer’s goal of refining their relationship with plastic and reducing their carbon footprint. First introduced in March of 2023, Tangle Teezer hopes these plant-based brushes will account for over 15% of global sales by 2030.
Here Are The Exact Steps & Tools Used For JLo’s Met Gala Bun
Spoiler alert… her stylis used two Tangle Teezer brushes.
So what did I think of the product? The first thing I noticed about the Plant Brush was the sleek design and variety of bristles. Marketed to work well on wet and fragile hair, I can confirm this brush worked like a dream. I have fine hair and was able to easily brush through my hair without breakage or pulling. I tested the brush out on dry hair, wet hair, and when blow drying my hair, and was impressed every time with the brush’s ability to easily detangle and leave my hair feeling smooth yet voluminous. What impressed me the most was the Plant Brush’s ability to detangle. I toss and turn a lot in my sleep, causing some intense tangles in my hair, and the bean brush seamlessly removed even the gnarliest of knots without ripping out my hair or causing pain. Upon testing this brush, it immediately became a part of my daily hair care routine.
The Ultimate Styler Hairbrush
The second product I tested was the Ultimate Styler hairbrush. This product is designed to work on all hair types and is meant to be used when performing the finishing touches on your hairstyle for the day. First impressions- I liked the lightweight feel of the brush and how it left my hair shiny and smooth. Meant for dry-styling, this brush effectively got rid of tangles in my dry hair. I was also impressed with how this brush created nice volume and did not flatten my fine hair.
Comparing The Two Brushes
While both brushes successfully detangled and left my hair feeling smooth and voluminous, my favorite of the two is the Plant Brush. The Ultimate Styler is perfect for styling, but the Plant Brush can be used on any hair type, on wet or dry hair, and is a jack of all trades when it comes to hairbrushes. Sustainability-wise, the Plant Brush is also the way to go, as it is produced from plant-based materials versus the Ultimate Styler brush which is made from plastic.
Tangle Teezer features even more products I have not yet tested that are designed for various hair types and styling needs. I recommend taking the brand’s Healthy Hair Quiz, a quiz that provides hair product recommendations based on your styling preferences and hair type.
BRAND REVIEW
The brushes were wonderful, but let’s also evaluate Tangle Teezer’s sustainability efforts! I admire the brand’s transparency and environmental goals. Below is a breakdown of a few of the brand’s noteworthy, eco-friendly practices and goals.
Redefining Their Relationship With Plastic
While many of Tangle Teezer’s brushes are currently made from plastic, the products are designed to last. The brushes are created to withstand daily use and are meant to last years rather than a season. Introducing products like the Plant Brush, made from sustainably-sourced, mainly plant-based materials, is another way the brand is limiting their reliance on plastic. The brand also utilizes cardboard packaging and steers clear of plastic packaging.
Recycling Programs
Did you know that Tangle Teezer helps you recycle your old hairbrushes? Simply mail your old Tangle Teezer brush (or a plastic brush from any other brand) to Tangle Teezer to be recycled for free. The brand’s website highlights Tangle Teezer’s success with the hairbrush recycling program, stating, “In 2022, we recycled 500 hairbrushes, and in 2023, we more than doubled that figure to 1,200 brushes. In 2024, we want to keep doubling our efforts and we’re aiming to save 2,400 brushes from landfill.” This recycling program benefits not only the planet, but the consumer as well. Mail in an old brush and receive a 15% off coupon for your next Tangle Teezer order.
WOULD I RECOMMEND TANGLE TEEZER PRODUCTS?
Yes! Both brushes I tested out expertly removed the knots in my hair, left my hair feeling soft, added volume, and featured sleek designs with a variety of brush bristles. I would also recommend the brand as a whole due to their increased sustainability efforts, impressive hairbrush recycling program, and dedication to reducing their plastic usage.
