Embrace the warmer months with bedding that promises a cool and refreshing night’s sleep. While many of us might automatically seek out cotton bedding, linen bedding can better handle the risinig temperatures of summer. Linen is a material sourced from the sturdy flax plant. Not only are the fibers strong, but they are absorbant and fast drying, making it ideal for warmer weather. It’s no wonder that the material has remained popular in warmer regions from ancient Egypt to the Caribbean.
Linen also has the added benefit that when compared with other natural fabrics like conventional cotton, bamboo or tencel it is considered to be one of the most sustainable fabrics. The flax plant, which provides linen, is fully used so that little of the plant is wasted. And, it grows using considerably less water and or nutrient rich soil than other plants like cotton. Furthering it’s sustainable credentials is that the fact that if linen fabrics are undyed and left natural ( which includes the colors tan, ecru, ivory or grey) it can be 100% biodegradable.
Linen… needs as much as 60% less water to grow than cotton… It requires fewer chemicals and pesticides. And linen lasts even longer than cotton — and longevity is perhaps the best path to sustainability.
