When you think of coral reefs, images of colorful ecosystems teaming with marine life might come to mind. But, with global warming putting coral reefs in peril, the opposite is true. Worldwide, coral reefs are becoming almost dormant and experiencing bleaching. This phenomenon occurs when continuous stressful conditions turn the corals white, leaving them susceptible to diseases and death. As water temperatures reach record highs, coral reefs in the Florida Keys are bleaching at an increased frequency and severity. In Thailand, the last two decades have seen drastic rates of coral bleaching and a reduction in the diversity of marine life. So, what can we do about it?
Conservation, restoration, and educational organizations around the world are working to restore coral reefs. Some have even teamed up with tourist destinations to educate guests on the plight of coral reefs and involve them in the solutions. One such destination is the sustainable luxury resort Six Senses. Located in Yao Noi, Thailand, off the edge of Phang Nga Bay, the resort offers guests a chance to pursue coral restoration projects through partnerships with local NGOs. Located in the quietness of nature, the resort also draws from its surroundings to offer fresh experiences that relax and reinvigorate while fueling a deeper connection with nature.

Free-range chickens roam along grassy knolls and white sands on a sustainable farm actively striving to be zero-waste. Eggs aren’t the only organic food that lands on guests’ plates. Fresh goat milk is used to reduce carbon emissions. Local and seasonal produce is prioritized by chefs. Honeybee colonies are supported to increase pollination. Even the drinking water is bottled sustainably. Plastic bottled water imported from overseas destinations is out. Only local water is served.
Volunteer To Help The Eco-System
The coral reefs surrounding the resort have been researched and studied by the Oceanography Institute. In 2017, the sustainable luxury resort teamed up with marine biologists to offer guests the opportunity to rebuild local coral reefs. The program focuses on nursing and transplanting coral reef pieces back to health. Similar types of programs have seen the Six Senses Fiji recognized for its climate efforts including coral restoration at the annual HICAP 2018 Sustainable Hotel Awards.
