We do yoga to feel good. Inside and out, yoga is a sport centered around health and wellness. But, when it comes to the cropped tanks and leggings that we wear in downward-facing dogs, we rarely think about whether or not they’re doing good. But, they’re also made from crude oil. In some reports polyester production sucks up 342 barrels of crude oil yearly. And, when it comes to their end-of-life these manmade fabrics are estimated to take up to 500 years to decompose. Yoga clothes made from cotton also have an environmental footprint. While cotton is a natural and biodegradable fabric, conventional cotton is loaded with chemicals. In 2000 the U.S. recorded that 84 million pounds of pesticides were applied to cotton crops. Seven out of the 15 commonly used pesticides were listed as “possible,” “likely,” “probable” or “known” human carcinogens by the Environmental Protection Agency. Thankfully, brands were offering sustainable yoga clothes that go against convention with environmental initiatives that focus on reducing plastic waste, and our reliance on oil and organic materials that are healthier for both our body and the environment.
