The winner of Bloomberg’s Philanthropy $1 million Sustainable City Fund has been announced. For their plan to build more than 110 miles of cycle roots safe for children and the elderly, Fortaleza won the top prize. Second-place winners include Addis, Ethiopia, Mombasa, Kenya, Wellington, New Zealand, and other cities. Overall entries from 275 cities in 66 countries were assessed by the Global Designing Cities Initiative (GDCI), an urban design NGO founded by Janette Sadik-Khan. The organization will also guide cities towards sustainable design and engagement of their new bike routes.
