Empowering women has always been a driving force for entrepreneur, philanthropist, and the co-fonder of Boss Beauties, Lisa Mayer. The multi-hyphenate has dedicated 10+ years to equipping and empowering the next generation of women with the skills they need to succeed and the stories to inspire them from women they can look up to. And she isn’t about to slow down on her mission anytime soon. In honor of Women’s History Month, Lisa will capture that mission in Boss Beauty, an inspirational book about self-love and success with a high gloss sheen fit for your coffee table. The book honors the women who came before us and inspires those finding their own path and life purpose.

Celebrating Women: Activists, Founders & Leaders

Be confident. Love yourself enough to pursue your dreams. You are not alone. These are some of the resounding messages I found when reading the book. There are passages on kindness, affirmations, and “advice from your big sis when you feel like giving up.” Of course, each of the boldly colored pages features an equally bold quote from women like actress Jameela Jamil, businesswoman Randi Zuckerberg, olympian Valerie Arioto, and investor Arlan Hamilton.

Pull your own chair up to the table… Don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t belong.

The Importance Of Empowering Women

We live in a world where women are often faced with harsh societal expectations, limitations, and inequality. It’s become such a global problem that the United Nations has made Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment #5 of the Sustainable Development Goals. These are a few statistics that show some of the limitations women are expected to face every day around the world.

  • On average, women in the labor market still earn 23% less than men globally.
  • Women spend about 3x as many hours in unpaid domestic and care work as men.
  • Children of mothers with no education in the Latin American and Caribbean region are 3.1x more likely to die than those with mothers who have secondary or tertiary education.
  • Around 2.4 billion women of working age are not afforded equal economic opportunity.

Just as there is data that shows the impact of gender inequality, there is also data showing what happens when gender equality is treated as more than just a fundamental human right. It’s a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world. The U.N. has conducted studies that show the positive impact on societies when women have the same economic, decision-making, and health opportunities as men.

  • Research indicates that when more income is put into the hands of women, child nutrition, health and education improves.
  • Evidence from 25 developed and developing countries indicates that countries with higher female parliamentary representation are more likely to set aside protected land areas.

Boss Beauty is on a mission to empower the next generation of women and girls to be everything they want to be. The book is in line with the U.N’s Sustainable Development Goal #5 wrapped up in a vibrant array of portraits and quotes from diverse inspirational women that the next generation can relate to. I found that the words of wisdom and real-world advice are inspiring on my journey as a woman, a mom, and an entrepreneur. Likewise, my daughter, who initially sat down inspired by colorful photos, spent 30 minutes reading and ruminating on the quotes.

Lisa Mayer’s Mission to Empower Women

Lisa’s journey as an entrepreneur started with a desire to help others and a determination to make a difference. She built her first company, providing mentorship to women and girls worldwide. Despite facing financial challenges and limited resources, her unwavering belief in the power of not giving up drove her to bootstrap her venture. This experience fueled her desire to inspire young women and share the message that they can achieve success regardless of their circumstances.

Life is full of colossal challenges. Main key to success: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

Martha Delhanty

Lisa’s next business venture began while she was pregnant with her son and introduced to the world of Web3. Immersing herself in the new technologies she soon became fascinated by the idea of harnessing it to empower young women. Recognizing the power of entertainment in capturing the attention and imagination of young women, she launched the NFT company and women-empowerment brand Boss Beauties with her husband, Anthony Furlong, in 2021. The company’s first NFT collection, consisting of 10,000 unique digital portraits of independent and diverse women, sold out in 90 minutes, making it the first female-founded, venture-backed digital collectible company, generating $2.3 million in just 90 minutes. A portion of the sales goes toward supporting women and girls’ education and mentorship programs worldwide.

Building upon this success, the company released other NFT collections such as the “Role Models” series that featured the likes of Amelia Earhart, Frida Kahlo, Harriet Tubman, Princess Diana, Rosa Parks, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, and Maya Angelou that were displayed at the United Nations.
