Sometimes the simplest way to be sustainable is to choose one material over another. When it comes to the clothes and textiles we use in our everyday lives, the most sustainable materials to choose are natural and plant-based. This can look like buying an organic cotton towel instead of one made from polyester, a plastic-based material that accounts for the use of 342 million barrels of oil yearly and microplastic when washed.
Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides or other harsh toxins and is estimated to use 90% less water than conventionally grown cotton. When organic cotton is made into items that also forgo using harsh dyes and chemicals during processing, the item is safer for the wearer and could potentially decompose naturally at its end-of-life. In case you’re unfamiliar with the statistics, some studies show that polyester textiles can take 20 to 200 years to decompose. Less chemical use, water conservation, and a smaller CO2 and microplastic footprint are all good environmental reasons to choose organic cotton beach towels for your lounging summer days.
