The MET Gala is one of the biggest fashion events of the year. A fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute located in Manhattan, it’s known for its attendee’s extravagant and creative looks.
The MET Gala 2024 dress code, “The Garden of Time,” was inspired by J.G. Ballard’s short story and in line with the MET’s exhibit “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” The exhibit looks at how technology can have an impact on making old garments new, sparking many attendees to consider how they could use sustainable fashion in their look.
From pre-loved and vintage garments to recycled materials, to lab-grown diamonds, these attendees and celebs showed the world how sustainability and style can perfectly coexist.
Zendaya in Vintage
Zendaya showed up to the red carpet in three looks this year — one of them, a black gown with a large floral headpiece, was a vintage look from John Galliano’s Givenchy 1996 haute-couture collection. In our fast-fashion-obsessed world, the look served as a reminder that repurposing and re-wearing fashion is glamorous, too.
Kendall Jenner in Vintage
Kendall Jenner showed up in a vintage look as well. Her look – a black, glittery, sleek gown – was a 1999 piece from Alexander McQueen’s Givenchy couture collection.
Charli XCX in Upcycled Materials
Singer Charli XCX looked to recycled fashion for her 2024 MET look. The white Marni dress she wore was made from upcycling t-shirts from the 1950s-1970s. Her goal was to make a statement piece from simple staple pieces. Safe to say, she achieved the vision.
Ed Sheeran, Cara Delevingne, FKA Twigs and Stella McCartney in 100% Sustainable Materials
Stella McCartney is a designer and well-known sustainable fashion advocate. This year, she dressed not only herself in a sustainable look, but also celebrities including Cara Delevinge, FKA Twigs, and Ed Sheeran. Materials included VRAI sustainable lab-grown diamonds,
sustainably made viscose, and responsibly sourced alpaca yarn. Ed Sheeran also wore vegan black dress shoes from Stella McCartney’s menswear line.
Demi Moore in vintage wallpaper
The idea behind actor Demi Moore’s dress was to create a Victorian-style gown where she appeared to be blooming and covered in thorns. The material of choice? Recycled, vintage wallpaper. The designer, Harris Reed, is known to use sustainable materials in his brand, and achieved Moore’s look by creating a structural bodice with hidden boning to support this eye-catching design made from vintage wallpaper.
Amanda Seyfried in Deadstock Prada
Deadstock fabric is fabric that is left over from manufacturers in an amount that is too small to use for production. Often, this fabric is thrown out. Instead of creating waste, this fabric can be used for new garments. Actor Amanda Seyfriend’s stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, embraced this material to create a beautiful silver gown using deadstock fabric from Prada’s 2009 collection.
Janelle Monae in Recycled Plastic Bottles
Singer Janelle Monae made a statement this year by showing up in a Vera Wang dress made from recycled plastic bottles. Crafted into circular and floral shapes, this couture gown directly spoke to the need to consider environmental sustainability in fashion.
Maria Sharapova in 100% Ethically Sourced Organic Cotton
Tennis star Maria Sharapova wore a dress by designer Prabal Gurung in collaboration with brand Boll & Branch, manufacturer of luxury bedding. The designer used their organic cotton , which is ethically grown on family-owned farms in India. Cotton, often referred to as the “dirtiest crop,” often uses heavy pesticides that are harmful to the planet and farmers. Maria Sharapova’s bright yellow dress stands out as a statement that there are better alternatives to this common fabric.
Sustainable Lessons from the (Green) Carpet
While most of us won’t find ourselves strutting down a red carpet anytime soon, we can draw from the creative sustainable choices made by celebs this year and try them out in our own wardrobe. Here are five ways how.
1. Wear vintage and second-hand clothes
Like Zendaya and Kendall Jenner, try shopping for something pre-loved, or borrow from a friend, next time you’re in need of a new look.
2. Opt for sustainable fabrics
Look for clothing made from ethically sourced, organic materials, like Maria Sharapova wore, and sustainable semi-synthetics such as Stella McCartney’s forest-friendly viscose, a semi-synthetic material.
3. Embrace clothing made from deadstock
Like Amanda Seyfried, choosing clothing made with deadstock fabrics can keep these materials out of the landfill. Brands that use scrap fabric and upcycle clothing are similar options with a benefit to the planet, like these L.A. brands that are using repurposed fabrics in their clothing.
4. Choose recycled materials
Good news: you don’t have to make your own dress from cutup plastic bottles in order to wear recycled materials! Many clothing brands are making synthetic materials like nylon out of plastic bottles, and using it to create items like shoes and swimwear.
