If you’ve been looking for help when it comes to making more sustainable shopping choices in your life, your wish is coming true. Thanks to companies crafting innovative solutions that help consumers shop better, there are apps that help you to fight food waste, choose better take out and measure your environmental impact. This month, a new partnership between the Swedish buy-now-pay-later app, Klarna and Good On You offers shoppers a curated list of sustainable brands. The app will highlight brands that place an emphasis on environmental and ethical initiatives based on Good On You’s 500-plus data points that examine how a brand is sustainable.
Twenty-three clothing brands are featured in Klarna’s Sustainable Collection. These include Nudie Jeans, Mara Hoffman and Pangaia. All brands have made sustainable commitments either from the onset or over the course of the last few years. For instance, Nudie Jeans focuses on making products from 70% sustainable fibers that include organic cotton and recycled wool or polyester. In an effort to reduce waste, the brand also offers free repairs on all jeans… forever. Pangaia, a material science company, has crafted altheisurewear basics from seaweed fibers and puffer coats from recycled fibers and insulation sourced from wildflowers instead of feathers. All brands can be easily seen from Klarna’s homepage where shoppers can discover what makes a brand eco-friendly while shopping the collection of sustainable brands.
This latest sustainable initiative is in-line with the app’s commitment to help consumers better understand how their shopping decisions are making an environmental impact. In 2021 Klarna launched a carbon emissions tracker which allowed users to be able to see the average CO2 emissions per purchase. In the beginning of 2022 the emissions tracker expanded to include CO2 emissions per product with comparisons to similar items included as well. “Our vision is to empower consumers to vote with their wallets to enact change,” David Sandström, Chief Marketing Officer at Klarna explained in the company’s press release. “As a first step, we gave users insights into the environmental impact of their shopping with our CO2 tracker. Now, we are giving consumers powerful tools to act on this knowledge and inform their shopping choices.”
The collaboration with Good On You, offers consumers transparency and a deeper look into how a brand is sustainable. Each brand is evaluated for its impact on the planet, people and animals. Based on Good On You’s point system, brands are given a rating from 1-5. Only those with a top score are featured on Klarna’s Sustainable Collection meaning that they have taken actionable steps to be sustainable while sharing that data with third-parties to verify their eco-friendly actions.
