An estimated 75 million garment workers are employed around the globe. The hours are often long (10- 16 hour days, six days per week). And a majority of wages are estimated to be below the living wage. Sometimes they’re as low as $0.15 per hour. For decades labor rights organizations, local governments, and brands have been petitioning and advocating for garment workers’ rights. Some projects and petitions have resulted in wins for living wages, back wages paid, and securing their right to unionize. Earlier this month, garment workers in Aguascalientes, Mexico achieved the right to unionize. Garments workers at the sewing facility, which manufacturers of denim products, will be protected under law to “freely exercise their freedom of association and collective bargaining rights,” said U.S. Trade Ambassador Katherine Tai.
“Through the Rapid Response mechanism, we have made it clear that companies are expected to respect the representative union and negotiate in real collective bargaining, whether in cases involving the auto sector or like today in the garment sector,” said Deputy Undersecretary for International Affairs Thea Lee. “We applaud the parties for reaching this agreement, and we again recognize the strong collaboration with the government of Mexico in protecting workers’ rights.”
